| · Over 15,600 firefighters are on the frontlines of 19 major fires and lightning complexes that continue to burn in California, though good progress is being made. Despite rising temperatures, firefighters continue to increase containment efforts on most of the wildfires. That progress has allowed many of the evacuation orders to be lifted or downgraded. Firefighters continue to put out hot spots in residential areas, while utility crews remove fallen trees and other hazards, in an effort to get the over 27,000 people still evacuated back into their homes.
Since the lightning siege that started on Saturday, August 15, 2020, there have been nearly 14,000 lightning strikes. During this time-period, there have been more than 900 new wildfires, which have now burned over 1.48 million acres. Sadly, yesterday a firefighter died battling the August Complex on the Mendocino National Forest. A second firefighter is receiving medical attention. The US Forest Service is continuing to work toward determining additional details into what happened. This incident brings the total number of fatalities during the siege to eight.
Seasonable weather conditions continue to aid firefighters in their efforts towards containment at lower elevations. Above 2,000, feet firefighters are still seeing low humidity without recovery at night. Warmer conditions are expected over the weekend and isolated thunderstorms are still possible in the upper portion of northern California and the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. A heat advisory is in effect for the northern most counties. An excessive heat warning is in place for coastal and inland Southern California.
